Yardlings Destroy Brown, 36-7, as Offense Explodes

By Francis T. Crimmins jr.

The freshman gridders demolished the Brown Bruins, 36-7, in yesterday's away contest, as the Yardlings racked up a total of 255 yards rushing in 61 attempts and revenged a shutout defeat at the hands of these same Bruins just two weeks ago.

Domination was the name of the game as the Crimson took the opening kick-off and marched 80 yards for a touchdown to establish a lead that was never relinquished.

Brown coach Howard Vandersea said, "I have never seen a team that has dominated the game so much against us," in reference to the Crimson's scoring machine.

With the Crimson leading 7-0, Harvard quarterback Tim Davenport marched the troops down field and hit halfback John Bernlohr in the endzone with a 12-yard scoring strike. The conversion kick failed and the Crimson led 13-0 with five minutes remaining in the half.

Brown bounced back immediately on the strength of a Mark Smith to Brian DelleDonne aerial, and the Bruins trailed by only six, 13-7.

Just 42 seconds later, the Crimson tallied once again on a drive that was sustained by the deft running of shifty halfback, Larry Schember. Schember capped the march with a one-yard dive and the Crimson led 19-7, as the conversion kick failed.

Coach Chet O'Neill called Schember the offensive star of the game as the native of Bellflower, Cal., rushed for 120 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Harvard regained possession after a Brown turnover with one minute left in the half. A few plays later, Crimson quarterback Tim Davenport connected on a 13-yard pass to Mike Foust for another touchdown, and Harvard entered intermission with a healthy 26-7 lead.

In the second half, the Crimson offense continued to roll as Schember scored another touchdown, and a fourth-quarter field goal rounded up the scoring.

A native of Providence, O'Neill said, "I always wanted a victory over Brown, and I just thanked my boys for giving it to me."
