A puzzling inconsistency kept the Harvard and Radcliffe sailors from taking top honors in all of their three local regattas over the long weekend.
Saturday and Sunday, Radcliffe placed a dismal third of nine schools in competition for the Man-Labs trophy at MIT. Jackson College and Salem State College finished ahead of the 'Cliffe in heavy winds.
No Repeat
Top Radcliffe skipper Marie Roehm could not repeat her winning performance of last week, as she and her crew, Cassie Levitt, placed a lowly fifth in Class A. A baffled coach Michael Horn said, "Marie seems to do well on every other weekend."
Horn cited newcomer Pam Mack's second-place finish in Class B as the one bright spot for Radcliffe in the match. In her first skippering task, Mack assumed the helmsman's duties from Sarah Herrick after Herrick's seventh-place finish in the first race of the day.
On Sunday, the Harvard sailors hosted six other schools in a regatta on the Crimson's home course. Harvard won easily.
In piling up a 27-point margin over second-place Northeastern, Harvard won two of the three divisions. Tom Reps and David Poor won the men's event, and Lora Fleming and Sarah Herrick triumphed in the women's match.
In the freshman competition, rookies Bob DuBois and Bucknell Webb took third place for the Crimson. The rules of the regatta required that the crew and skipper swap roles midway in a match.
Revenge
Northeastern hosted the Greater Boston Championships on the Charles on Monday. The Husky sailors avenged Sunday's loss to Harvard by trouncing the Crimson in all three divisions. Harvard finished second of the ten schools in the competition.
Class A crewman Ogden Ross cited Northeastern's familiarity with the boats used in Monday's racing as the key factor in their win. "Northeastern has been brought up in those boats," he said.
