Harvard's golf team got stellar performances from Art Burke and Tom Yellen Saturday and squeaked by Princeton and Yale in its last game of the regular season.
The Crimson's top five averaged 79, for a 395 total, followed closely by Princeton's 402 total and Yale's 406.
Burke won medalist honors for the lowest score of the day, turning in a sparkling three over par 74. Yellen was right on his tail with a solid 77.
Other scores for the Crimson were Quinn Smith's 80, Ed Barry's 82, Hank Banninster's 82, Steve McConnell's 83, and Jon Ellis's 85.
Saturday's win at a soggy Yale University Course gave the team a final record of 12-3. There is a chance that this performance may get the golfers into the NCAA finals.
The Crimson looked like a sure bet to be selected for the national championships until it finished a disappointing ninth last week at the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association tournament.
Coach Bob Harrison said that he should know within the next few days whether the NCAA selection committee will invite his team. "The odds on our selection aren't good, but we still have a prayer," he said.
The Crimson are the only Ivy League member to defeat all other Ivy opponents this year. Though Princeton bested Harvard by finishing third in the Easterns last week, Coach Harrison remains undaunted. "As far as I'm concerned we're Ivy League champs," he said
