Stickmen Drop 8-2 Contest to Ephmen; Lack of Execution Hampers Offense

The boys from Williams College came to the big city yesterday and were greeted by ferocious winds but a less than organized effort from the Crimson lacrosse team (0-5), and left town with an 8-2 triumph.

Attackman John Gallagher and midfielder Bob Pinkard, each with two goals and an assist, paced the Ephmen victory, but the teams were more equal than the score would indicate. A frustrating lack of execution on the Crimson midfield and a fear of taking the ball to the goal by Harvard attackers was the difference in the contest.

From the opening whistle, play on the Business School field was hampered by a chafing southern wind, and for 9 minutes and 45 seconds, neither team controlled the ball or dented the nets.

At that point however, Williams attackman Ken Kubie came around the goal face, and in spite of vigilant checking by defenseman Charlie Kittredge, popped an off-balance, one-handed shot past goalie Brian Everist to grab a 1-0 lead.

Sparkling Lumber

Kittredge, starting despite a sprained ankle, sparkled at defense, especially when lumbering upfield to clear the ball.

However, Crimson fast breaks were defused by a hesitancy to challenge Williams defenders on the crease. Harvard missed a heartbreaker in the first quarter when attackman John Hagerty's underhand shot on the crease in a one-on-two situation skipped wide.

Williams offensive players were more intrepid, and in daring the goal face, were more accurate. Halfway through the second quarter, Bob Pinkard caught an upper corner of the goal on a feed from Gallagher, and four minutes later notched an assist, converted by Steve Dietrick. The Purple and Black led at the half, 3-0.

Second-half scoring began a uspiciously, but it was not until 6 minutes and 58 seconds had elapsed that Quinn, picking up the ball near the midfield stripe, dodged downfield, without passing off, and in the midst of flummoxed Williams defenders scored in the air. But Pinkard and Dan Entwisle tallied for the Ephmen to cushion the lead at 5-1.

Clear Break

Late in the third quarter, Quinn broke an attempted Williams clear, and charging downfield, fed perfectly to Hagerty, sandwiched on the crease, who converted the last Harvard score.

In the fourth quarter, however, Gallagher put on his scoring display, assisting Andy Harper, then tallying twice himself, to ice the 8-2 victory.

Williams, ranked fifth in New England as of Monday, outshot the Crimson, 23--14, and dug up more ground balls, by 52--40, on the game. Its record is now 4-1.
