Radcliffe Skiers Overwhelm Nine Opponents

The Radcliffe ski team coasted past nine opponents Saturday to win the next-to-last New England Women's Intercollegiate Ski Conference (NEWISC) meet of the season at Mittersill, Vt.

The 'Cliffe skiers took first, fourth and seventh places in the slalom, amassing 960 points, 110 ahead of UMass, the next conference finisher.

"It was an incredibly good day," beamed Kathy Angell, who won the slalom by a huge 3.3 second margin.

Team captain Debbie McLane didn't get a chance to perform in her specialty, the giant slalom, which was called off Sunday due to lack of snow.

Maine and Middlebury, both non-NEWISC teams, placed second and third in the meet, with Wellesley, Boston University and Mount Holyoke rounding out the rankings.

The 'Cliffe squad goes into next Saturday's Intervale, N.H., meet with a firm hold on first place, and looks like a sure bet to clinch the conference championship.

The skiers' performance was especially impressive because they had competed the day before in the Women's Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Conference invitational meet in Pico, Vt. Radcliffe was the only NEWISC team invited to enter the meet, and placed fifth in the giant slalom and fourth in the slalom.

Angell took second in the slalom in the invitational meet, and McLane bagged third in the giant slalom.

Radcliffe skiers have won their conference title in six out of the last seven years. Last season, due to general apathy, the 'Cliffe did not field a ski team, but this year there are so many students interested in competitive skiing that Radcliffe has both varsity and junior varsity teams.
