To the Editors of The Crimson:

The Feb. 9 edition of The Crimson quoted Kevin Starr, praising the appointment of Laura M. Gordon as the next Senior Tutor of Eliot House. You also quoted Mr. Starr's statement that Ms. Gordon will be the first woman appointed as a Senior Tutor.

This statement is false. Phoebe Chao is Senior Tutor of Currier House, Linda Seidel is Senior Tutor of North House, and Dean Kathleen Elliott is Senior Tutor of South House. It is unfortunate that we should have to point this out. This incident is representative of the "back of the bus" status accorded to Radcliffe in the University community.

We congratulate Ms. Gordon on her appointment and we believe that it is Harvard's obligation to do much more to elevate the status of women in the University. We do, however, remind you that at Radcliffe women have been Senior Tutors for years. Beth D. Jacob '74   President for the South House   Committee
