Faculty Endorses Independent Work Program Changes

The responsibility for grading independent work projects will shift from senior tutors to Faculty advisers next year as a result of legislation approved by the Faculty Tuesday.

With an affirmative voice vote on a motion offered by Robert J. Kiely, associate dean for undergraduate education, the Faculty also amended its rules on independent work to require that students applying for such projects be in good academic standing and moved up due dates for the work.

Currently each student's Faculty adviser is required to sign his advisee's application and to help him develop a plan for the project. The senior tutor approves the student's application and grades the project.

Under the new legislation, the senior tutor must sign the petition for an independent work project, but the decision whether or not to grant credit or no-credit to the student will be left to the Faculty adviser.
