The Crimson harriers have placed three men on the 12-man 1973 All-Ivy cross country team.
Named to the squad were Harvard seniors Jeff Brokaw and Andy Campbell and junior Jim Keefe. It was the first appearance on the team for each of the three runners.
The squad is selected from the top Ivy finishers at the Heptagonal meet held on the Van Cortland Park course in New York City earlier this month.
Discounted the Military
In that meet, Keefe finished 8th, Brokaw placed 13th, and Campbell took the 16th spot. These runners were among the top 12 finishers, however, when the runners from non-Ivies Navy and Army are discounted.
Ivy League champion Pennsylvania placed five men on the squad as the entire first team of the Quakers finished in the top 12. Leading Penn was sophomore Dave Merrick, who won the individual title for the second time, and captain Denis Fikes who made his second appearance on the top Ivy dozen.
Princeton and Columbia each put two men on the All-Ivy 12. The Tigers were led by sophomore sensation Ron Vander Kraats, the Princeton number one man.
Consistent Harriers
Keefe, Campbell and Brokaw have been the consistent scorers for the Crimson harriers all season. Keefe, the number two man on the squad, has given Harvard solid performances at the top of the scoring lineup all fall.
Brokaw and Campbell have improved throughout the season to the point where before the Heptagonal meet, Crimson coach Bill McCurdy called Campbell "a good runner...[with] endurance" and said that Brokaw "looked better than canned beer."
