Less Men, Fewer Leaves, More Room

Henry Rosovsky does not look like John T. Dunlop and he does not run the Faculty like John T. Dunlop. Since Dunlop's departure last January, the relationship between the dean's office and the Faculty has taken a new direction.

Dean Whitlock suddenly began saying things last week that one expects a dean of the College to say; but the fact remains that Whitlock had never said them before. He suggested that Harvard could ease its over-crowded housing situation by admitting 25 fewer men.

Not exactly a drastic proposal--but nevertheless, it is a proposal from an administrator who has lingered in the background while President Bok took the lead on changing the ratio of Harvard men and Radcliffe women.

Another administrator found himself with a broader base of power this week when Dean Rosovsky announced that Robert J. Kiely, associate dean for Undergraduate Education, would chair the General Education Committee. That position has always been the domain of the dean of the Faculty.
