Top officials of the Harvard library system will meet today to discuss a proposal submitted by the Freshman Council to permanently extent Lamont Library's daily hours.
The proposal requests that the library be open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays, 8:45 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. This would add 12 and three-quarter hours to the present weekly schedule.
"Many students prefer late night studying and for those students who share rooms, the library is the only place where they can work," the Freshman Council said in a January 10 letter to Theodore G. Alevizos. Librarian of Lamont Library.
The letter also explained that students could make good use of the extra library time before classes begin, and that it is presently difficult for freshmen to find suitable places to study on weekends.
"We'll be getting together about the funds tomorrow," Alevizos said yesterday, "My own estimate would be that the extra hours would cost the Faculty of Arts and Sciences an additional $5000 per year in payments for staff."
"Most of the money would go to student though, and personally I would not be opposed to longer hours." Alevizos added.
Louis F. Martin, Librarian of Harvard College, will have the most say in the decision, Alevizos said.
