Cagers to Face Springfield In Home Opener Tonight

By Douglas E. Schoen

Coach Bob Harrison said yesterday that James Brown would start tonight's home opener against Springfield.

Brown only played 15 minutes in Saturday's loss to Indiana because of what Harrison described as a sore ankle. Following the contest, Brown said that he felt 100 per cent healthy and was ready to go at full speed.

Joining Brown in the starting line-up will be Tony Jenkins, Marshall Sanders, Jim Fitzsimmons, and Kenny Wolfe. Wolfe-missed practice Tuesday due to a head cold but should be for the game this evening. Center Floyd Lewis, who had a disappointing game against Indiana, will move to the bench to allow Brown to step into a starting role.

The Crimson coach said after reviewing the films of the Indiana game that he was convinced Harvard could jell into a winning team. "We did a lot of excellent things in the game; things I didn't notice when I watched the game. The films showed that we made a number of films posses on offense which were exactly what I have been looking for," Harrison said.

Harrison said that he felt Harvard would have done better against Indiana 1 he had been able to scout them before Saturday's contest. "If I had had the opportunity to have seen their contest (Steve) Downing play. I know we could have cut down on his effectiveness," he said.

He added that he was not given enough money in his budget to fly to Indiana and watch the Hoosiers in one of their two pre-season scrimmages.

Inexporlanced Squad

Springfield should be much easier prey for Harvard than the Hoosiers. The Chiefs only have two returning letterman one of whom was a freshman last year Starting at center for Springfield will be Bill Gregory, six ft. eight in., a sophomore with a fine outside shot. Gregory got into foul trouble early in Springfield's 71-70 victory over University of New Hampshire Monday night and only hauled in one rebound.

Don Pingree and Ken Lewis will join Gregory on the front line. Pingree missed last season with a shoulder injury, but is one of the Chief's better boardmen. He pulled down eight rebounds against UNH and added ten points. Lewis averaged 12.9 points a game last season and according to Harrison, is Springfield's stronger rebounder.

Junior College Transfer

Backcourtman Keith Daly, the high scorer in Springfield's game against New Hampshire with 19 points, is a transfer from Dutchess Community College in upstate New York. His running mate at guard in five ft. eight in. Ted William, a flashy playmaker and good shooter.

Springfield will probably use a variety of defenses against the Crimson. Monday night they-tried half and full-course zone presses as well as a man-to-man. Harrison said he did not know that Springfield would do against Harvard's man-to-man defense because New Hampshire threw a zone defense against the Chiefs.
