The fortunes of Harvard's varsity wrestling team have soared during exam period. Two of the Ivy League's leading teams, Princeton and Cornell have fallen in the past week. Saturday, Columbia tripped Cornell, 22-18, and Wednesday night Penn toppled undefeated Princeton, 20-17.
The only undefeated team, Yale, has yet to face Penn, Princeton, Columbia, or Harvard; so a multi-team race for the leage championship appears very likely.
In the Columbia-Cornell match, the Lions rolled up a 17-0 lead but needed a decision in the final bout to win the match.
This weekend, Princeton will host Cornell and Brown will seek its first league win against Penn. Basketball Princeton and Penn, ranked among the top teams in the nation, will meet tomorrow night in Penn's Palestra. The victor of that head-to-head match-up will automatically become the favorite in the race to represent the Ivy League in the NCAA Eastern regionals. In their first meeting, the Tigers snapped Penn's 30 game winning streak in Ivy competition, 69-56. Brown's Arnie Berman is currently ranked eighth in the nation in scoring and leads the Ivy League with a 30 point average. During the Ivy's exam period, only Columbia and Cornell have been in action. Cornell welcomed visiting Columbia to Ithaca and presented it with a 87-74 Ivy souvenier. Columbia returned the favor in New York by giving Cornell its first Ivy triumph, 71-58. Hockey Penn rebounded from a 4-3 loss to Brown to win twice this week in the Ivy League's only hockey games. Penn beat Dartmouth Saturday, 4-2, and travelled to Princeton Wednesday for a simple 11-3 triumph over the winless Tigers. This weekend. Cornell hosts Dartmouth while the Quakers seek their third consecutive win at the expense of visiting Yale. Harvard players dominate the league's statistics. The Crimson's "Local Line" of Dave Hynes, Bill Corkery, and Bob McManama hold the top three scoring spots through five games. Three other Harvard players, captain Tom Paul. Bob Muse, and Bob Goodenow, are in the top ten. Goalie Joe Bertagna leads the league with a 2.33 goals against average.
