Harvard's hockey team faces a genuine threat to its unbeaten ECAC record Saturday night when the Crimson travels to one of the real zoos in the East, U.N.H.'s Snively Arena.
New Hampshire has been hot and cold en route to a 6-3 ECAC record this season. Last Saturday night, the Wildcats stumbled to 4-1 loss to mediocre Penn, while Clarkson was murdering B.U., 6-2. Four nights later, Clarkson roared up to U.N.H. and ended up on the short end of a 3-2 upset.
Despite the arguments of Harvard's "Local Line" devotees, U.N.H. may have a line that rivals the Hynes-McManama-Corkery trio. Forwards Gordie Clark, Guy Smith, and John Grey have combined for 36 goals this season, seven more than Harvard's high scoring juniors.
U.N.H., like Harvard has a fairly strong second line, but one of the significant differences between the two squads lies in the recent play of the third lines. While U.N.H.'s third line has been flat all season. Harvard's line of Lief Rosenberger, Bobby Havern, and Harry Reynolds has been picking up both confidence and goals over the last two games. Rosenberger's line added an insurance goal against Cornell and poured in three goals--more than either of the other lines--against Dartmouth.
U.N.H.'s goalie, Bob Smith, has been as erratic as the team, and his mood for the night could make or break the Wildcats. Smith was awesome early in the season against B.U., kicking out 50 shots as B.U. squeaked by, 2-1, and a sieve against R.P.I. (a 5-3 loss) and Penn. Overall, the defense is inexperienced, with two freshmen among the first four regulars.
Unless the Hong Kong Flu strikes the Local Line in the next 24 hours, its hard to believe that Harvard will cool off its present pace on Saturday night. Snively Arena will not be very hospitable, however, and if U.N.H. isn't flat from its game against St. Lawrence tonight, the Wildcats have a fair chance for an upset.
