An opportunistic Harvard hockey team scored five first period goals and then coasted to an easy 7-3 victory over Dartmouth last night in Davis Rink.
Harvard capitalized on its first break with only eight seconds gone as Larry Desmond picked up a loose puck in the Dartmouth zone and beat Indian goalie Peter Proulx. The junior left wing flipped a shot just under the cross bar, and it was 1-0 before the crowd was even seated.
Bill Corkery scored the first of his two goals just over a minute later as he skated in on Proulx' left side and hit the far corner with a low drive. This effort was representative of the flawless first period of hockey that Harvard played.
The Indians came back at the five-minute mark with their best offensive flurry of the game, only to be shut off by the tenacious Harvard defense.
Dave Heinz scored for Harvard at 14:20 on a rebound of Corkery's shot from the blue line, and then Bob Havern added a pair of goals after scrambles in front of the Dartmouth net to run the score to 5-0.
Harvard was well on the way to a rout, but Dartmouth bumped back and played their opponents on even terms the remainder of the game.
Corkery added his second goal on a picture-passing play at 2:31 of the second period, taking a feed in front of Proulx and drilling it past him to complete a three-on-two rush. The Dartmouth defense, however, responded after this goal and held Harvard to one score over the final 37 minutes.
Bill Dunbar got the first Indian goal, scoring Joe Bertagna's shutout at 12:12. Steve Arndt fanned on a shot from Dartmouth, but retrieved the puck, and got it to a Dunbar, who rifled it past Bertagna's left side.
Bill Barry cut the lead to 6-2 on a deflection through the goalie pads with Frank Krahn assisting. Both goals came on power plays.
Harry Reynolds completed the scoring for Harvard in the third period, digging the puck out of the tangle in front of the crease and drilling it past Proulx.
The line of Reynolds, Havern, and Leif Rosenberger proved to be the game's best, accounting for three goals and just missing on a number of other occasions.
Arndt made the final margin 7-3 as he converted a Dunbar rebound with just over a minute left in the game. Dunbar shot on a sharp angle to relief goalie Steve Perry's left, and Arndt was right there to score with Dana Johnson also contributing an assist.
