By E. J. Dionne

Overcoming a strong Princeton showing in the field events, the Harvard track team took 22 of 23 available points in the sprints and defeated Princeton 84-70 Saturday at the Stadium.

Strong showings by Bailey Reed and Chris Alvord in the 100 and 220 runs and the 440-yard sprint-relay highlighted the day. Harvard outscored Princeton 58-24 in the running events.

As expected, Princeton turned in a very strong performance in the field events. These came early in the meet and at the beginning of the running events. Harvard found itself down by about 15 points. In the first running event, the 440 hurdles. Harvard's Ed Dugger tripped and fell.

"When Dugger fell down in the 440 hurdles, I thought I hadn't been living right," said head coach Bill McCurdy. "I started looking for four leaf clovers, but there was no grass growing in the Stadium."

McCurdy's clover came in the form of the mile run, which was the next event. Jon Enscoe, John Quirk and Tom Spengler took the lead from the start and held it all the way through. Enscoe edged Quirk at the line. Both were timed at 4:25.9. Spengler, who was suffering from a knee injury, finished right behind in 4:26.0.

The 440

The 440 came right after the mile. Harvard's Rick Melcoin took the lead and held it for 300 when he was passed by Princeton's Pete Schnure who was kicking around the turn. Melvoin kicked 20 yards later and beat Schnure handily. Melvoin's time was 51.5. Schnure ran 51.8.

In the 100, Reid and Alvord ran 1-2 at 10.0 and 10.1 respectively. They edged Princeton's Bob Founcher who ran 10.2. Bob Calyton and Dave Elliott then took 1-2 in the 880 which was followed by a sweep of the 220 by Reid, Alvord and John Schneider.

Harvard swept to victory in the freshman meet, 110-43.
