George Allen, coach of the Washington Redskins, said that Monday's 38-24 victory over the Los Angeles Rams was his "best win ever."
The game against the Rams was Allen's first game against the team he coached last year. Allen left the Rams after a "personality" dispute with Rams owner, Dan Reeves.
A number of players who Allen obtained in off season trades from the Rams--including linebackers Myron Potties and Jack Pardee--played major roles in defeating their old teammates. Pottios and Pardee were an important part of the Redskins defensive effort in a first half that held the potent Ram offense to 10 points.
Allen said it was a bigger win for him than the 1963 NFL title game when he was presented with the game ball by the champion Chicago Bears, whom he served as an assistant coach.
Allen said before the game that quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, who has been out most of the season with an injury, would see a considerable amount of action. However starting quarterback Billy Kilmer played a near perfect game, completing 14 of 19 of his passes for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns, and was never in danger of being replaced.
The victory by the Redskins gave them a 9-3-1 record and second place in the National Football Conference's (NFC) Eastern Division. The victory also clinched a playoff spot.
The Rams loss dropped them to a 7-5-1 record and put them a half game back of the San Francisco Forty Niners in the NFC'S Western Division.
