Sailing in International Twelve-Foot Dinghies at the U. S. Coast Guard Academy over the weekend, skipper Tim Black with crew Tad Kramarczyk won the New England Single Division Freshman Championship. In capturing the Priddy Trophy for the first time since 1952, the freshmen close out a highly successful season with the best record in New England.
Saturday's racing began in sunny weather with strong southerly winds. Dartmouth got off to a streaking start with three consecutive firsts, but the Big Green then wallowed. Black, who scored two fourths and a second in the early three races, won the next match and finished consistently high throughout the day to lead MIT by four points.
On Sunday the rains came with howling gusts of wind. In the first race Black finished fourth to MIT's second, shrinking his lead to two points. Rising to the competition, Black easily outclassed the fleet with sharp tactical sailing.
Final scores: Harvard, 34, MIT, 41, Dartmouth, 47, Coast Guard, 51, B. U., 51, Northeastern, 62, Tufts, 69, Yale, 86, Bowdoin, 91, Merrimack, 108, and Maine Maritime, 118.
Consistency and team work has marked freshmen sailing this year. They have been led by Black and Kramarczyk and coached by last year's All-American sailor Abbott Reeve 71. This top New England team has finished in the top three spots in every regatta but one.
