Harvard's varsity track squad dominated both the running and the field events last night, overwhelming Northeastern, 80-37, in a dual meet held in the bubble. The Crimson freshmen also outgunned their Huskie counterparts, 83-24.
The evening got off to a quick start as Harvard's Ed Nosal claimed a win in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 60' 5?" N. U.'s Tom Sirois, who beat Nosal in last year's IC4A's, was second, five inches behind. On his last throw, he scratched out a potential 62' toss that could have changed the character of the meet.
From there on, Harvard took the momentum and built up a big lead. The Crimson lost only one field event, the pole vault, and just two running contests, the 600-yard run and the 1000.
Harvard's surprising strength in two questionable events-the high jump and the broad jump-contributed important points to the Crimson victory margin. Bob Moen edged Ed Baskauskas on fewer misses as they finished 1-2 in the high jump at 6'2". Harvard track captain Walter Johnson won the broad jump with a leap of 21' 91/2". Kevin Benjamin was just an inch behind Johnson, and only 1/2" ahead of Northeastern's third place finisher.
The best event of the night was the one mile run, as Harvard's Tom Spengler and John Quirk both broke the Farrell Facility track record. Bob Seals set the early pace as the three Crimson harriers pulled away from the Huskies after the first quarter. Jockeying for the lead, Spengler flashed across the line a stride in front of Quirk, with a time of 4:10.0. Quirk was caught in 4:10.1, also well under the previous mark of 4:11.4.
The two mile run also promised a Harvard sweep, as John Enscoe ran a solid race to grab the triumph in 9:12.3. George Barker hung back for most of the laps then broke away from the pack to place second, and Mike Koerner, who had built a large early lead, hung on for third.
Baylee Reid nipped N. U.'s freshman Steve Hogan for a win in the 60-yard dash, with Chris Alvord taking third. Reid's time was 6.5. Delray Maughan and Walter Johnson were first and third in the 60-yard high hurdles; with Maughan's winning time given as 7. 6.
Bob Clayton ran an impressive race in the 600, but was disqualified early in the event. Frank Prior took second in the race.
The Crimson freshmen also ran away with their meet, losing only two events and sweeping three. Leon Sharpe, Joe Madden, and Dick Simpson were the three top finishers in the long jump, and Joe L?combe, John Ward, and Austin O'Connor scored Harvard points in the high jump.
In the one mile freshman relay. Stan Polhill made up a large deficit on the final leg to give the Yardlings the victory with a time of 3:30.7.
