News Briefs: Woman Named Muslim Culture Professor

The Corporation has appointed three people- including a woman- to full professorships. They are: Annemarie Schimmel, named Professor of IndoMuslim Culture: Michael B. Elroy, Abbott Lawrence Rotch Professor of Atmospheric Science: and Arthur M. Jaffe, professor of Physics.

Schimmel's appointment doubles the number of women holding full professorships at the University. She assumes a chair endowed by the late A. K. Ozai Durrani, best known as the inventor of Minute Rice.

McElroy, a physicist at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, served as a member of the NASA Lunar and Planetary missions board, for whom he produced studies of the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter.

Jaffe, whose specialty is quantum field theory, joined the Faculty as assistant professor in 1967, becoming associate professor in 1969.

Minority Affairs

President Pusey has appointed Edward Wright, Jr., to the newly created post of assistant to the President for minority affairs. Wright, a black, served as dean of students at the Divinity School before his appointment to the new post.

Pusey said that Wright will "provide a focus in the University for the formulation of policy and programs involving minority faculty, students, and employees."

Wright has served as Baptist chaplain to Harvard and Radcliffe, and is a member of the boards of the West Medford Community Center, the Cambridge Community Schools Commission, and the Project on Services to Unwed Mothers.

Niemans Named

The Nieman committee has appointed 13 American journalists as Nieman fellows and four foreign newspapermen as Associate Fellows. The Nieman program, funded in memory of the founder of the Milwaukee Journal, brings journalists to Harvard for a year of independent study.

Squires, Nashville Tennessean: Josephine D. Thomas. Cincinnati Post and Times-Star; Ronald R. Walker, San Juan Star; and Jerome R. Watson, Chicago Sun-Times.

The associate fellows are: Hyuck Un Lew, Dong-A llbo (Seoul, Korea): Eddie B. Monteclaro. The Time (Manila, Philippines): Its no Sakane, Asahi Shimbun (Tokyo): and Theunissen Vosloo, Die Beeld, (Johannesburg, South Africa).
