Blacks Reminded To Uphold Unity

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Organization for Black Unity yesterday urged black students "not to get involved in non-functional activities against the war."

In a statement released in the afternoon, OBU recommended instead that black students channel their efforts into projects to build the black community such as the Newark election, the Cambridge Black Liberation Front Project for a year-round Black People's library, and the May 19 Solidarity Day Celebration of Malcolm X's birthday.

U.S. Imperialism

OBU stated that they "will remain opposed to all direct and indirect manifestations of U.S. imperialism (such as Nixon sending troops into Cambodia) but for black people to focus in on a single event is to miss the international aspects of our oppression."

OBU cited the university as "a white institution for white people."

"Whether or not white people close down the university (and that is the least they should do if they are half- serious) there are certain activties of immediate importance into which black students can funnel energies," the statement concluded.
