George F. Bennett '33. University Treasurer, lashed back Tuesday at insurgent stockholders challenging the General Motors management.
Following the Faculty's vote to support Campaign GM's two shareholders' resolutions, Bennett told United Press International that the proposals were "an opening wedge in the movement to socialize the traditional American way of doing business."
He also reiterated his desire to vote Harvard's 287,000 shares of GM stock with the management. "I feel GM has been responsible in its handling of stockholders' interests," Bennett said. "I think directors should represent the stockholders, not interests which could be divisive as well as disinterested in the company's interests."
A spokesman for the Campaign to Make General Motors Responsible yesterday denied Bennett's charge that the group was "disinterested" in the welfare of GM.
Speaking for Himself
A member of the Corporation, which has final say over how Rennett votes the Harvard proxy, hastily explained that Bennett was speaking for himself and had not consulted the Corporation before making his remarks.
He said the Corporation will meet Monday with the Roard of Overseers. If GM can be fit into the agenda, the University's decision may come sooner than the expected May 18 announcement.
