After rolling over two Ivy opponents, Harvard's varsity track team anticipates little trouble in its bid for a ninth consecutive Greater Boston Championship crown today and tomorrow at Boston College. A portion of the field events will be decided today, but all the running finals and the remaining field finals will be held tomorrow.
In the inaugural GDC's in 1961, Tufts defeated B.C., Brandeis and Boston University in a four-team meet. Harvard joined the competition the following year with Northeastern and M.I.T., and has easily won the title each successive year.
Undefeated
This year. the Crimson enters the meet fresh from an undefeated indoor season and easy outdoor victories over Princeton (97-57) and Dartmouth (115-39). In addition. the team will have defending champions in nine different events from last year's GBC's in which Harvard whipped second-place B.C. by nearly 100 points.
Senior Roy Shaw captured both the 880 and mile run last year but will possibly run only the mile tomorrow, since Harvard record-holder Kelth Colburn will be fit for the 880.
Crimson junior Dave Pottertti set a record in the steeplechase at last weekend's Penn Relays and will be a shoo-in to retain the crown tomorrow. He won the 3000 meter steeplechase last year in a time of 8,54.6. Another heavy favorite is Ben Lounsbury, who is defending champion in the 440 hurdles and a two-time winner already this season.
Field Events
Though off to a slow start this spring, junior Ed Nosal will be back to defend the hammer-throw title he won last year with a toss of 192 5. In the javelin. Harvard record-holder Richie Szaro is aiming for his second consecutive GBC crown but will be pressed by teammate Frank Champi. who edged Szero in the Dartmouth meet Saturday.
In other field events. John Avault will be defending his triple jump crown and Jim Coleman will try for a second straight high jump victory.
Coach Pappy Hunt's undefeated freshman team is also not expected to encounter any serious opposition in its title defense. The Yardlings ran up a 34 point margin over runner-up Northeastern in last year's meet.
