Harvard's Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League game at Yale was postponed indefinitely because of heavy rain. Weather permitting, the Crimson will face Brown in a doubleheader at 1 p. m. today in Providence, R. I.
The Crimson is 1-4 in League competition, but only trails second-place Brown by two games. Navy, at 6-0, appears to be out of Harvard's reach, but with Princeton at Army today and Dartmouth at Yale, Harvard could easily move into a three or four-way tie for third place if it sweeps today's doubleheader.
Nickens and Collins
Coach Loyal Park has scheduled left-hander J. C. Nickens and right-hander Phil Collins to pitch against the Bruins. Nickens, carrying a 1.65 ERA, pitched a five-hitter against Dartmouth in his last outing, Collins, a side-arm specialist, has compiled a 1.38 ERA.
Brown, 9-8-1 on the season, has a strong, deep pitching staff, but has suffered from an anemic batting streak. Against League-leading Navy, Brown lost two close decisions, 1-0 and 3-0.
The Bruins have three top hurlers, captain Fred Armonti (1.16 ERA), Bob Flanders (1.76), and Bob Thorley (1.16).
In its last doubleheader-against Dartmouth last weekend-the Crimson dropped both games. It split one with Columbia earlier in the season. Coach Bill Livesey expressed fear about a weak relief staff at the start of the season, but sophomore Rich Schaimler has developed into a fine reliever, shutting out Princeton in four innings last weekend.
The Bruins scored only one run in their first four games of the season, and in one stretch two weeks ago went scoreless in 26 of 27 straight innings. Brown's leading hitter is Jim MacAdams at ?297, but second baseman Bob Wiech is the biggest threat at the plate with four homers to his credit.
