Several of the top players of the U. S. and Australia will play a series of world tennis title matches in Harvard's Palmer Dixon Courts on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.
All proceeds from the matches will go to help support the construction of a public tennis center at Franklin Field in Roxbury.
The matches will feature some of the top names in world tennis. Stan Smith, America's No. 1 amateur tennis player, and fellow Davis Cup teammates Arthur Ashe, Clarke Graebner, and Bub Lutz will team up for the U. S. against the Australian twosome of John Newcombe and Fred Stolle for the best-of-seven series. The winner's share of the prize money is $11,000.
The program is set for two singles matches Monday, a singles and doubles Tuesday, and two singles and a doubles on Wednesday.
Match of the Year
"This looks like the match of the year in tennis," said Tom Regina, vice-president and general manager of the Pepsi-Cola Metropolitan Bottling Co. of Boston one of the sponsors of the event.
James A. Smith, head of the drive to erect eight outdoor and four indoor courts in the Roxbury community, said. "We needed something big, a real attention focuser. The world title match will direct attention to our project. We hope it will let possible donors learn what we're doing out here."
Harvard's Offer
Refering to Harvard's offer to provide the facilities for the matches. Smith added, "They took us in, and it's going to mean a lot to the kids of Boston, white and black, that Harvard saved our show."
Stan Smith said that the appearance of the Australian pros. Newcombe and Stolle, could make more than $50,000 to support the construction of the center. The total cost of the courts is estimated at $300,000.
Tickets for the matches are on sale at the Coop and the Department of Athletics ticket office, with either series or single night tickets available. The single night tickets are $10 and the series set sells for $37,50. Series' ticket holders will be admitted to the draw and player's reception Sunday evening at the Sheraton-Boston Hotel.
