A University policeman committed suicide early Wednesday morning in the basement of a Harvard building. Patrolman Wilfred T. Crabtree, 58, was found dead in the basement of Lawrence Hall.
Dr. David C. Dow, Middlesex County medical examiner, reported that Crabtree died of a "self-inflicted gunshot wound of the head."
Crabtree had worked for Harvard for 35 years, serving with the University police since 1944. He is survived by his wife Lillian, his father I. Thomas Crabtree, and his son W. Thomas Crabtree, Jr. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Central Square at 11 a. m. Saturday, January 10.
