Northeastern University Prepares For Anti-Hayakawa Demonstration

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Two factions of SDS at Northeastern University, the "Camille Cienfucgous SDS" and the "Northeastern Conspiracy," have announced they will conduct demonstrations at a speech Thursday by S. I. Hayakawa, president of San Francisco State College.

A spokesman for the two groups said that the demonstration will be held outside the building where Hayakawa will speak and that it will be peaceful. The Weatherman faction has circulated leaflets that call on students to demonstrate.

"White kids who dig that this country sucks, and who understand that Black and Third World revolutionary struggles should be joined instead of smashed, should come to Northeastern and GET HAYAKAWA!" the leaflet suggested.

Northeastern University's Distinguished Spakers Series is sponsoring Hayakawa's speech. Peter Lance, chairman of the series, said his organization had originally planned a debate between several college presidents, including Hayakawa. Lance said no one would accept an invitation to speak together with Hayakawa. "I had the feeling that they did not wish to be on the stage with Hayakawa because of the type of response he often receives from the audience," Lance said.

Northeastern University has secured court injunctions prohibiting several student leaders from participating in demonstrations that would interfere with either a G. E. recruiting effort or Hayakawa's speech. The University has also hired off-duty Boston policemen to strengthen the University's security force.

Yesterday, an SDS-led group of approximately 200 students demonstrated against G. E. recruiters on the campus.

Hayakawa will speak at 8:30 p. m., Thursday at the Northeastern Auditorium. Tickets sold out four hours after they were put on sale last Thursday.
