Lions Sparkle in Winter But Bunnies Stay Ahead

Winthrop has won the most points in House winter athletics, but Leverett still holds a slim lead in the year long Straus competition.

Winthrop edged out Dunster for first place in hockey--the only major winter sport now completed. The Lions also lead in "A" squash, while Lowell had held on to first in the "B" division.

In basketball, Winthrop leads the "A" division over second-place Dudley, which has a firm hold on the cellar in other sports. Dunster has taken over the "B" division lead form Eliot. The team standings in both squash and basketball are incomplete since several makeup game must still be played.

House volleyball, which got under way last week, has been converted from a minor to a major sport--a first place finish will bring 100 points this year. In spring sports, tennis has been dropped from a major to a minor sport, worth only 50 points for first place.

Commenting on Windrow's strong showings in the winter sports, House athletic secretary Joe Mullin said he was "very optimistic" about the House's chances for defending the Straus title.

Dark Lion

"I would have to call Winthrop the dark house or the race," he said, "but I am heartened by the great esprit de corps of the men at Winthrop." When the full results of the winter sports are tallied, Mullin said, Winthrop would move up fast in the Straus point totals.

"We are strong in crew, track, tennis, an dsoftball in the Spring, and I'm fairly confident we're going to win the overall Straus--you can quote me on that," he said.
