To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
I am afraid I misrepresented my own position ?? the Cambridge Project in talking with Jeff Magalif on Tuesday evening. My fault not his. If members of the Harvard faculties are to participate in re Project in a substantial way. I believe it to be very important that Harvard is represented on whatever Board determines Project policies. If these "representatives" are simply self-appointed individuals, my judgment is that their views will tend to become less influential over a period of time than if they have been appointed to the task, by the President, on the basis of an informal agreement between the two institutions. However, my judgment may be mistaken. If M.I.T. decides to give full weight to the opinions of individual Harvard members who sit on a Policy Board which it has established unilaterally, the results could be identical to those obtained by having the Harvard members appointed by Mr. Pusey in accord with an inter-institutional understanding. In that event, then, the decision would be "not really significant."
Because of my estimate of which result is the more likely. however. I was one of those on the Brooks subcommittee and the Committee on Research Policy who argued vigorously for appointment of Policy Board members by the President: I believe it to be the wiser choice and I will regret a decision against it-while hoping, in such an event, that my judgment will prove to be mistaken.
