Pitcher Bob Dorwart's shaky first inning against M.I.T. yesterday was enough to hand the Engineers a 4-2 victory on their home field.
The weather was cold, the wind was stiff, and Dorwart was both. He allowed a hit and walked three batters before he found anything resembling control. With one run in and the bases still loaded, the tall Kentuckian finally looked as if he had found some of his stuff. He got, M.I.T.'s Jim Cole to hit an easy double-play grounder. Second baseman Phil Smith took the throw from short-stop Jeff Grate for the first out, but threw the ball far over first baseman Joe Ignaclo's head. Two runs scored on the error and the M.I.T. lead was to prove insurmountable.
The Crimson made a gallant attempt to take advantage of M.I.T. errors in the second inning and almost regained the lead, scoring twice.
Grate Connects
Smith led off with a walk. After a fly out and a walk to Jim Cox, the M.I.T. pitcher started to crack. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Another wild pitch brought Smith hurtling in from third, but the catcher was there to meet him. When the dust cleared. Smith was out. Dorwart singled and again the runners advanced on a wild pitch. With two out and runners on second and third, Harvard's leading batter and shortstop, Jeff Grate, came to bat. He lined the second pitch into deep right field for a single, scoring two runs. Grate was thrown out trying for a double however, and the side was retired.
From then on the pitchers regained mastery and only one more run scored--an insurance run for M.I.T. in the fifth inning on a throwing error by Grate.
It was a tough loss for Harvard against a supposedly puny opponent. The continued weakness of the Crimson hitters bodes ill for the future. So far, only two starters, Grate and Ignacio, are hitting over 300.
Princeton comes to Soldiers Field for a League game Friday at 2 p.m., and Columbia will be here Saturday.
