With the awesome power that has marked its play all season, Harvard's varsity squash team routed Navy, 9-0, yesterday afternoon in Hemenway Gym.
The victory over the Midshipmen--who are the ranking Intercollegiate Team champions--has to make Harvard a heavy favorite to recapture the team title from Navy at the Intercollegiate tournament in March.
Anil Nayar, whose forehand shot has been unofficially clocked at over 100 mph, Larry Terrell, and captain Rick Sterne led yesterday's win with easy 3-0 victories. But Jose Gonzalez, playing in the third spot behind Nayar and Terrell, gave the crowd of 125 some real excitement.
Gonzalez took the first game from his Navy opponent. David Beard, 15-4, and seemed on his way to winning the second. But Beard rallied to draw even at 13-13, and slipped by Gonzalez to win in extra points, 18-14. Then, with the score 6-6 in the third game, one of the heavy-set Gonzalez' sneakers crumbled beneath him.
New Shoes
Team manager Steve Burbank found Gonzalez a new pair, and coach Jack Barnaby arrived with a broom. While the Harvard star gingerly tested the new shoes, Midshipman Beard seized the broom and swept the court floor ferociously.
Gonzalez, strengthened by the change in footwear, won the third game, 15-9, and held on to win the match in the fourth game with a hard-fought 15-14 victory.
With the addition of 3-0 wins by Michel Scheinmann and Fernando Gonzalez and 3-1 victories by John Whitbeck, Fritz Hobbs, and Bruce Weigand, the Harvard sweep was complete.
Tickets for the United States National Singles championships which will be held at Harvard Saturday, Sunday, and Monday go on sale Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Hemenway Gym. The special rate for Harvard students and Faculty is $5 per day.
