The University of Pennsylvania's undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences has stripped ROTC courses of degree-credit starting with class of '74. The action came on a two-to-one faculty vote last Tuesday and was announced last night.
The College of Arts and Sciences is only one of Penn's nine undergraduate colleges, but contains about half of the male undergraduates. A Daily Pennsyl-vanian staff member said last night that the other colleges are expected to follow suit.
The faculty's action relegates ROTC to the status of an extracurricular organization. The resolution made no mention of revoking the three floors of offices ROTC now uses.
In the future, ROTC will have the option of offering its courses outside the regular curriculum like a "Free University" or of persuading the regular academic departments to give courses that students can take to fulfill ROTC requirements.
All of Penn's present four classes and the incoming class of '73, which has already received ROTC applications, will be able to take ROTC course for degree-credit.
