Unbeaten Varsity Fencers Challenge C.C.N.Y. Today

Harvard's undefeated varsity fencing team will meet one of the toughest challenges of the season today when it takes on a strong team from the City College of New York at 2 p.m. in the IAB.

The Crimson sworsdmen ripped through their first two matches this year, beating Holy Cross, 24-3, and Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, 20-7. But they had a little trouble with M.I.T. on Thursday, winning 17-10. C.C.N.Y., undefeated this year and one of New York's powerhouses along with Columbia and New York University, has a weaker team than last year's squad which trounced Harvard, 20-7. But the New Yorkers can still provide a stiff test for the Crimson.

In last year's meet sabreman Ron Winfield was the only bright spot, winning all of his bouts. Except for Winfield, no Harvard fencer won more than one bout. Winfield, now the team captain, will again be a key figure, but this year he has some companions.

Strong on Top

Larry Cetrulo, the number one sabre, Tom Keller, the top foil man, and Bill Theodore, the number one epee, are all strong. Sophomore Geza Tetrayllay in epee and senior Sam Fouts in foil will provide depth.

Against M.I.T. Harvard showed some weaknesses. Theodore dropped two bouts and Winfield lost once. The slack did not hurt, however, as Cetrulo and Keller swept their bouts and Tetrayllay put in a surprising two-win performance.

But today the team's stars face particularly strong individual competition. Keller especially will have stiff challenges in foil. The meet will probably be won or lost by the number two and three men on each squad. Tetrayllay, Fouts, and foil man Cliff Ruderman, will be the key men.

If the team is to have any chance against Columbia, NYU, and Princeton it must be able to beat C.C.N.Y. The Columbia meet is the next big one, also in the IAB, on January 11.
