The Harvard squash team will meet its first real test today against Army in Hemenway Gymnasium at 2 p.m. The Crimson squad and the Cadets are both undefeated, although neither has faced a strong opponent so far this season.
Harvard's two victories were both lopsided drubbings of weak Cornell and Amherst squads. Army boasts an equally impressive thrashing of Wesleyan, 9-0.
One-Two
Harvard's lineup is headed by the strongest one-two combination in intercollegiate squash today, Anil Nayar and Larry Terrell, Michel Schienmann's strong showing against Terrell earlier in the week indicates that Harvard's allegedly vulnerable number three spot may be stronger than expected. Positions four through nine are fairly evenly matched as the extremely close scores in the intersquad matches earlier this week indicates.
The Cadets have strength at the top as well. Army's number one player, George Alcorn, is just a few notches below Nayar in the intercollegiate ranking. He has been a consistent performer and promises to give Nayar a strong test in the feature match.
Williams registered the first upset of the intercollegiate season Wednesday as the Ephs squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Penn, pre-season favorites for the national championship. The home court advantage gave Williams the necessary edge in an extremely close match. Harvard plays Penn at Philadelphia in February, but plays Williams at Hemenway so that if the home court remains a decisive factor, a three or even four-way fight for the national championship remains a possibility.
