Skaters Ride Win Streak Against Surprising Bruins

Riding a three game winning streak, Harvard's varsity hockey team travels to Providence tonight to face Brown at 7:30 p.m. in a prelude to its sell-out game with B.C. Wednesday.

The Crimson is coming off a 7-4 victory over B.U. and is favored over the Bruins, but Brown has a pair of highly-touted goalies--Mark Burns and Don McGinniss--who could be the first to stymie Harvard's high-scoring forwards.

This tandem, which Coach Jim Fullerton alternates, has victories over B.U. and Providence College to their credit and has been the chief bulwark for an otherwise mediocre Brown team.

But Harvard's goal tender Bruce Durno has proved to be one of the stronger Ivy goal tenders, perhaps second only to Cornell's All-American Ken Dryden.

Durno put in a commendable performance in the 11-2 rout of Dartmouth, making 18 saves. In his second varsity appearance, he turned back 44 B.U. shots to secure the 7-4 victory.

With his 44 saves, Durno eclipsed the old Harvard record of 43 held by Bill Fitzsimmons and Charles Flynn. He broke the record despite being speared in the neck by B.U. forward Eddie Wright in the second period.

Durno was not the only sophomore to star in the team's win. The sophomore line of Joe Cavanagh, Steve Owen, and Dan DeMichele scored four goals, including two in the three goal spurt within 22 seconds and broke the game wide open for the Crimson.

Jim Hornig, George Murphy, and Chris Gurry scored the other three goals. Gurry's goal climaxed a spectacular full-length rush with one Harvard player in the penalty box.

No Pushover

Although weakened by the loss of eleven lettermen, including All-American Wayne Small, Brown has defied predictions that it would be a pushover. They won their opener with Providence, 3-2, and their contest with B.U., 5-4. Their two losses have been to powerhouse Cornell, 8-2, and to B.C., 3-2.

Brown's defense is their forte. Besides goalies McGinniss and Burns, Brown boasts junior defensemen Curt Bennett and Steve Wormith. Bennett is a big (6'2"), high-scoring defenseman who was second team All-Ivy as a sophomore. Wormith, a fullback on the Bruin football team, is an excellent body checker.

Captain Bob Devaney, who centers a first line of Bob Walsh and Terry Moore, was the Bruin's chief scorer last year with 23 goals. The second line center is Richard McLaughlin, who played on a line with Cavanagh and DeMichele for New England's championship high school team.
