To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
Pres. Pusey was quoted in your newspaper as having said "There is a feeling somehow that the phrase 'citizens of Cambridge' doesn't include the people who live and work at Harvard" and further that "academic people shouldn't be ignored." As a permanent resident of the City of Cambridge I would like to speak to President Pusey's statement.
First: the vast majority of the people who "live and work at Harvard" are transient in that they have no intention whatsoever of remaining in Cambridge for the rest of their lives. Therefore they have no permanent interest in what happens to The City of Cambridge as a working community.
Second: the Corporation of Harvard College both in part and in entirety REFUSES to communicate in any sort of dialogue with the people of the City of Cambridge. The Corporation even refuses to speak to the City Council of the City of Cambridge. These refusals are acts of snobbish contempt against the permanent residents of the City.
Third: the overwhelming majority of people employed by Harvard University in advanced administrative positions, by choice do not live in the City of Cambridge.
Fourth: helpful members of the students and faculty are NOT ignored by the people of the City, and their efforts are appreciated. I would venture to guess that this statement by Pres. Pusey is prompted by the increasing unrest within the City directed against the Administration of Harvard College. Jessie L. Gill, Chairman Mount Auburn Tenants Union. -1-1
