The Harvard sailing team surprised the best boats in the country with an unexpected second-place finish in the Kennedy Cup Regatta at Annapolis last weekend.
Stanford topped nine sailing powers in the four races sailed in 44-foot yawls supplied by the host Naval Academy.
Harvard's eight-man crew sped to a second-place tie with Tufts, two points behind Stanford, in Saturday's two races.
Tony Parker skippered the Crimson into a deadlock with the Indians for first place in the third race Sunday morning. The mettle of Harvard's crew came forth as it worked through the fleet in a 20-knot wind.
But in the finale, Stanford methodically ploughed to its victory. Harvard came in third, behind U.S.C. The Regatta ended at Stanford 38, Harvard 36, U.S.C. 35, and seven others, including Princeton, far behind.
On the foredeck for Harvard were Dan Burnes, Jim Notman, and John Bullard; in the afterguard, Kinny Howland, John Cunningham, Peter Robbins, and Franz Schneider.
