Davis, Stern Lead Lowell Team To House Boxin Championship

With some 300 blood-thirsty spectators yelling "kill him" and "What's my name?" 22 of Harvard's finest tried to beat each other's brains out in the intramural boxing finals held yesterday afternoon in the IAB.

Lowell House, with two individual winners and two runners-up, won the team title, dethroning Leverett, which could only manage one winner in yesterday's competition.

Harvard's Cassius Clay, Eliot's Steve Crosby, won his third consecutive 185-lb title in the day's most spectacular bout, a first-round knockout of Bill Crowe, also of Eliot.

John Peterson, Winthrop's strongman, clobbered Dunster's Vic Petzy to gain a TKO in the second round of the unlimited- class title bout. Peterson displayed a varied attack, punching equally well with either hand.

In the first bout of the day, and also the best from an esthetic point of view, sophomore Chris Davis of Lowell House outpointed the defending 135-lb. champ, Eeroy Uyehara of Dudley, in an excellent show of speed and technique.

The crowd got into the act after the 145-lb bout, booing the decision of referee James McCarron, which gave the win to Lowell's Dave Stern over teammate Dwight Porter. Porter had thrown some very strong right crosses in the first two rounds, and had seemed in control throughout the fight.

The two other House finals were bloody affairs, both winning the approval of the large audience. Bob Raymond of Quincy scored with three solid right hooks to the jaw of Lowell's Tom Jones in the third round to knock out his rival, and cop the 165-lb. title.

In the all-Leverett 175-lb final, Ralph Bittman gained a second round TKO after Charles Delony, who had been in command, threw out his right shoulder.

Holworthy and Matthews South each garnered two division championships in the freshman matches, but Matthews South, with three runners-up, won the team title.

Holworthy's winners were Bob Listenbee (185) and John Ballantyne (155), while Dave Hughes (165) and Joel Poholsky (125) won for Matthews.

Other freshman titleholders were Greenough's Steven Shinn (145) and John Cramer of Grays in the unlimited division.
