Szaro Sets Scoring Marks; Frosh Crush Bruins, 28-6

Tom Miller scored two touchdowns and Richie Szaro broke a two-years-old scoring record yesterday in leading the freshman football team to a 28-6 whitewashing of Brown.

Quarterback Bill Kelly demonstrated his versatility by going both ways in the first quarter. As a defensive halfback, Kelly intercepted a Brown pass early in the game, juggled the ball for a few seconds, and returned it 42 yards for the game's first score, Kelly averaged 4 yards a carry and passed seven times for two completions and 29 yards.

Szaro Beats Gatto

Szaro's extra point following Kelly's touchdown broke a freshman season scoring record of 44 points held by Vic Gatto. The wondrous Richie gained 149 yards in less than three quarters of play and averaged 8.8 yards a carry. This included a 38-yard run on the second Harvard play of the game and a 41-yard scamper late in the first quarter.

Pete Varney scored the second touchdown of the day on a nine-yard plunge off right tackle, Varney was outstanding all day playing linebacker as well as fullback. The 240-pound speedster was the offensive workhorse, averaging 6.1 yards a carry.

Brown Scores on Pass

Brown took the kickoff after Varney's score and drove 58 yards in ten plays to score. The tally came on a 19-yard pass play. The extra point went wide and the half ended with the score 14-6.

In the second half, the Harvard defense held Brown to seven yards on the ground and intercepted twice to stymie the Bruin attack. The Crimson offense kept rolling, and team captain Tom Miller added two touchdowns to the Harvard score.

Szaro Eats Up Yardage

Miller's first tally came midway through the third quarter finishing an 87-yard drive. Thirty-one of those yards were gained by Szaro, and Kelly contributed the rest. Szaro took the ball from the Brown 25 yard line to the three in four successive plays; before Miller drove over for the six points. Miller's last touchdown came early in the fourth quarter, ending a 68-yard drive and wrapping up the game for the Yardlings.
