Booters Hoping For Upset Win Against Brown

It is highly possible that this Saturday morning's varsity soccer game at Brown could be a disaster.

"Right now the Bruins are in the driver's seat as far as the Ivy League race is concerned, and getting by them will be a pretty tall order," Harvard coach Bruce Munro said yesterday.

After this past weekend's Ivy action, the Bruins are all alone at the top, by virtue of their 5-2 shellacking of Cornell. Combined with the scoreless tie between Penn and Yale at New Haven. Brown's victory leaves it with a 4-0-1 league ledger with Penn right behind at 3-0-2. The Crimson (now 3-1-1) are tied with Cornell for third.

"We're really no better off than we were before the Princeton game [which Harvard won on Saturday, 4-2, in overtime]," Munro said. "We're still a longshot for the title, and after Brown, could be a longer shot."

Bruins Are Brutal

Munro has reason to be worried. The Bruins are strong--very strong. In 12 games (all victories except for a 1-1 tie at Penn in their first Ivy game) the men from Rhode Island have scored 42 goals while yielding only 7. In ten games, by comparison, Harvard has tallied 33 times while giving up 17 goals.

Even if Harvard should manage to beat Brown this week, Cornell would still have to get by Penn--at Penn's narrow home field, where the Quakers are next to unbeatable--for the Crimson to grab a share of the championship.

Munro will have starting left halfback Abi Azikiwe and goalie John Axten in better shape than they were against Princeton. "After their injuries, they both played fairly well," Munro said. "But they should be stronger this week."

Sophomore goalie Dick Locksley, who was expected to be back last week, still has a very sore shoulder and probably won't be ready for the Brown contest.
