Japanese Runners Win Marathon But Harvard Also-Rans Also Run

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A little more than half an hour after Kenji Kimihara led the four-man Japanese delegation across the Boston Marathon finish line yesterday. Tom Pollard, a second-year Med School student, harbingerd a not not-so-closely-bunched, not-so-swift contingent from Harvard.

Pollard, who was on the track and cross-country teams at Pomona College for four years, covered the 26-miles 385-yard course in two hours, 49 minutes, and 53 seconds. It was the first race of any kind he has run since November, but his ten-mile solitary workouts over the winter kept him in good enough shape to place 51st yesterday.

Walt Hewlett, Harvard's leading on-trant the last two years, ran well of the pace and decided to drop out at the 21-mile mark "As long as I wasn't going anywhere," Hwelett said, "I didn't want to risk an injury by continuing after I got tried."

Erich W. Segal '58, former Dunster House tutor, ran with Hewlett most of the way, and carried-on to finish 69th, in 3:00.12.

Trackman Wes Williams came in almost one hour behind Kimihara, registering as the first Harvard undergrad finisher.

Clive Kileff, a varsity tennis player who moonlights at dstance running, placed 158th, with a time of 3:33.55.

Boisfeuiliet Jones, a varsity tennis player who moonlights as sports editor of the CRIMSON, snuck into the top 280 with a 3:49.11 clocking, good enough for 199th.
