The tennis team swept all nine matches with M.I.T.'s inept engineers yesterday for its second win of the season.
Harvard lost only one set all afternoon. Sophomore Bernie Adelsberg, playing in the number two slot, dropped the first set, but rallied to beat Tech sophomore Carl Weissgerber, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Dave Benjamin, who has been hampered by a back injury, beat M.I.T.'s Dave Chandler, 6-4, 6-3. Benjamin's back could be the key to Harvard's success this year. However, he was not pressed to win so the condition of his back was not really tested.
Seniors Clive Kileff and Rich Friedman won the third and fourth matches.
Kileff, who relies on steady ground strokes from the backcourt, beat Tech junior Rich Thurber, 6-3, 6-2. Kileff, consistently retriving shot after shot from the corners, won easily. Friedman had a little more trouble but still won in straight set. 8-6, 6-4.
Dick Appelby and Bo Jones won the last two matches. Appleby blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0, while Jones won handily 7-5, 6-4.
In the doubles, Adelsberg and Benjamin teamed up to beat Chandler and Thurber, 12-9. Adelsberg and Benjamin will have to improve on yesterday's sloppy play if they are to win the crucial matches against Princeton and Pennsylvania. Kileff and Dave Hodges played second doubles, while Friedman and senior Disny Adams won the last match.
In the one close match of the day, Cari Weissgerber played the only really competent tennis for M.I.T. Playing in numbing cold, he was able to upset overconfident Adelsberg with his high, well-placed Cobs. However, the Crimson sophomo's quickly recovered and dominated the last two sets.
