The rugby team ran out of steam after winning the first three matches of its southern tour and finished up with a 3-1-1 record.
The ruggers started their win skein by shutting out the Richmond Rugby Club 3-0 April 3. Back John Dickinson got the only score of the match on a long dropkick in the second half.
On Monday North Carolina State University fell by an identical 3-0 score. Freshman Steve Zeitlin, playing in only his second varsity game, got the three points with a hustling effort as he fell on the free ball beyond the try line after the opposing fullback had trouble handling Dickinson's long kick.
The new backs the team was counting on continued to come through in the third game as the club scored its biggest win of the tour, coming from behind to defeat Duke 6-3. Scrum Paul Budenhagen got both the tries after Harvard had won the lineouts.
On Thursday the team was held to a 6-6 draw when the University of Virginia scored a try in the last two minutes to even the game. Earlier Harvard built a 6-3 lead on freshman Sione Tupouniua's two scores. He and Tim Neely fell on a kick blocked by Captain Quent Spector for the first score and Sione got the second as he dove over for a try.
In the last game on Saturday a tired Harvard team had plenty of excuses for bowing 3-0 to the Norfolk Rugby Club in a sloppily played match.
The absence of John Dickinson, the fatigue from traveling between games, injuries, and Norfolk's "subversive" undermining of the Harvard ruggers by holding the traditional post-game party the night before the game, all contributed to the Joss.
