The Answers You've All Been Waiting For:

By Andrew Beyer

Nobody got all the answers to last Thursday's rock and roll quiz, but three entrants did hit 39 of the 40 questions correctly. They were John Leshy '66 of Kirkland House; Jim Sersich '68 of Lowell; and Suzanne Snell '66 and Joel DeMott '67 of Eliot Hall. Almost everyone was stumped by question number 32, which asked for the source of the lines, "Like a summer rose needs the sun and rain, I need your sweet love to heal the pain." This lovely couplet comes from Tommy Hunt's unjustifiably obscure "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself," which is perhaps the greatest song ever made.

Here are all the answers:

1. La La La La La--Blendells.

2. Ya Ya--Lee Dorsey.

3. Um Um Um Um Um Um--Major Lance. (We apologize profusely for a printer's error which dropped the last "Um" in the quiz.)

4. Bama Lama Lama Loo--Little Richard.

5. Rama Lama Ding Dong--Edsels.

6. Rang Tang Ding Dong--Cellos

7. Ne Ne Na Na Na Na Nu Nu--Dick Doo and the Don'ts.

8. Ooh Poo Pah Doo--Jessie Hill.

9. Papa Oom Mow Mow--Rivingtons.

10. La Doo Dah Dah--Dale Hawkins.

11. La Dee Dah--Billie and Lillie.

12. Ooby Dooby--Roy Orbison.

13. Ookey Ook--Penguins.

14. Shout Shout (Knock Yourself Out)--Ernie Maresca.

15. The Big Hurt--Toni Fisher.

16. Oh Julie--Crescendos.

17. Loop de Loop--Johnny Thunder.

18. Born too Late--Poni-Tails.

19. Willie and the Hand Jive--Johnny Otis.

20. Peanut Butter--Marathons.

21. Shake a Tail Feathers--Five DuTones.

22. Sea of Love--Phil Phillips.

23. Peanuts--Little Joe and the Thrillers.

24. I'm Not a Juvenile Deliquent--Frankie Lymon.

25. "Inside the church there's an altar filled with flowers; wedding bells are ringing and they could have been ours"--the lines come from Harold Dorman's "Mountain of Live."

26. "Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, 'Nix, Nix'; I'm gonna stick around till I get my kicks"--Elvis Presley's "Jail House Rock."

27. "I know a boy who was never blue; now he's living in a cell block two"--Jack Scott's "Leroy."

28. "George turned to Sam with his gold in his hand; he said, 'Sam, you're looking at a lonely, lonely man.' "--Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska."

29. "Floating face down in the dirty old river"--Dickie Lee's "Patches."

30. "He hit a screaming diesel that was California-bound"--the Cheers' "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots."

31. "Her name was Sylvie; his name was Earl." --the Jive Five's "My True Story."

32. Tommy Hunt's "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself."

33. Jerry Butler started his career as lead singer of the Impressions. 34. Clyde McPatter, of course, sang with the Drifters. But according to two entries he was a member of Billy Ward's Dominos at one time, and this was verified by the Early Bird of Radio Station WILD.

35. Chuck Jackson was a member of the Dell-Vikings.

36. Ben E. King sang with the Drifters.

37. Tommy Edwards recorded "Morningside of the Mountain, "Please Mr. Sun." and "Please Love Me Forever," among others.

38. Dickie Lee's follow-up to "Patches" was "I Saw Linda Yesterday."

39. The question of Little Eva's follow-up to "Locomotion" has caused a considerable controversy among local music scholars. Before her much deserved plunge into oblivion, Little Eva recorded three mediocre songs around the same time. They were "Old Smokey Locomotion," "Turkey Trot," and "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby." Clair Burrill '66, lead singer of Oedipus and His Mothers, has provided fairly convincing proof for the latter, but we gave credit for any of the three answers.

40. Clyde McPhatter recorded millions of songs with the word "love" in the title. Among them are "Treasure of Love," "Without Love," "Honey Love," "A Lover's Question," "Lover Please," Lovey Dovey," "No Love Like Her Love," and "Don't Take Your Love From Me.
