Harvard Five Tops Brown, 80-69; Sedlacek's 36 Points Spark Win

By R.andrew Beyer

Keith Sedlacek scored 36 points last night and led Harvard's basketball team to an 80-69 win over Brown in the IAB.

Sedlacek's output raised his season scoring total to 491, breaking the record he established last year. He also tied another of his Harvard records by sinking 16 field goals.

The senior's fine shooting was the only exciting note of an otherwise mundane contest. Harvard was ahead, 30 to 22, with 4:40 left in the first half; then Sedlacek hit a jumper from the circle, Bob Beller connected from the corner, and Jeff Grate sank a pair of foul shots, making the score 36-23. In the last two minutes of the half, Sedlacek hit three straight baskets which blew the game wide, giving the Crimson a 42-25 halftime lead.

Harvard held a sizable lead throughout the second half; with seven minutes to play Sedlacek scored his 33rd point of the night. He clearly had a chance to break Harvard's single-game scoring mark of 40, and the sparse IAB crowd started yelling for him to do it.

But it was precisely at this point that the Crimson's play turned sour. Brown's shooting was red-hot, and they were able to shave the Crimson margin to as little as six points in the last minute of play.

In addition to Sedlacek, Barry Williams and John Scott played fine games for Harvard. Williams dominated the rebounding. Scott, starting his first game since mid-season, had 14 points and did a good job under the boards.

Tonight the Crimson hosts Yale in the IAB. A victory would probably give Harvard a tie for fifth place in the Ivy League. The outcome will probably depend on whether Sedlacek can overcome the tenacious defensive play of Yale's Herb Broadfoot and have another big night.

Elsewhere in the Ivy League last night, Penn defeated Columbia, 83 to 68; Princeton overwhelmed Cornell, 81 to 62; and Yale topped Dartmouth, 68 to 56. The Quakers boosted their Ivy League record to 11-1 and clinched a tie for first place by beating Columbia. They can wrap up the championship by winning at Cornell tonight.
