Skaters to Face Cornell; Big Red Tops Ivy League

By Robert P. Marshal jr.

The Harvard hockey team heard as many "we're Number One" chants last Monday night as they'll over want to hear from hostile voices; so it's a good thing tonight's game is taking place at Watson Rink, 350 miles from Ithaca.

While Boston University, still hot from its Beanpot triumph, is making the suicidal trip to the rinks of St. Lawrence and Clarkson, the Big Red of Cornell, tied with B.U. atop the Eastern standings with a 13-1 record, will be clinching the Ivy League championship against the Crimson.

It's hard to know where to begin in lauding the Cornell players, though tracing their origin is no trick--they're all from Canada.

The first line of Mike Doran, Doug Ferguson, and his brother Dave, is the East's most prolific, with 55 goals to their credit. Doug's 46 points lead the ECAC individual statistics.

The second line of Paul Althouse, Murray Death, and Murray Stephen provides no letup, and scored three goals including the winner, in Cornell's 7-6 squeaker over Harvard a month ago.

Harry Orr leads the defense, which is Cornell's weak point--if it has one.

In the goal, Coach Ned Harkness alternates Dave Quarrie and Errol McKibbon, who have the two lowest goals-against averages in the East. Quarrie, who will play tonight, has let in 17 scores in 10 games. McKibbon has allowed 13, a third of them by Harvard.

Clarkson gave Cornell its only Eastern loss, 2-1, back on December 7. The Big Red has now won eight in a row since losing at Denver on New Year's Day.

For Harvard, Coach Cooney Welland has brought defensemen Dennis Clark and Pres Wolcott up from the JV and returned Captain Bobby Clark to defense to replace Ben Smith, Bob Carr, and Tag Demment whom he suspended for fighting in the B.U. game.
