Harvard's basketball team will make its bid for fifth place in the Ivy League when it plays at Brown and Yale this weekend.
The Crimson currently has a 2-7 Ivy mark, and has a good chance to knock off Brown (1-8) this evening. The Bruins have no exceptionally big men, nor do they have any devastating offensive threat.
Fishman High Scorer
Their high scorer is 5-8 guard Al Fishman, who is averaging 13.9 points per game. The top Bruin rebounders are 6-6 Dave Gale and 6-5 Don Tarr.
Harvard will have a much rougher time Saturday at Yale's Payne-Whitney Gym. The Elis are a far better squad than their 2-7 mark indicates; they gave Penn and Princeton a rough time, and two weeks ago shellacked a fine Columbia team, 88 to 69. Yale has a very well-balanced quintet, with four players averaging in double figures. The Elis shouldn't have much trouble defeating the Crimson by ten or fifteen points.
One interesting sidelight of this weekend's games is Keith Sedlacek's race for the Ivy League scoring title. The 6-1 senior, after his record-setting 40 points against Columbia Saturday, has scored 209 points in nine Ivy games. Stan Pawiak of Penn has 210 points, while Columbia's seven-foot Dave Newmark has 202.
Untangiement
The torrid Ivy League race should begin to be untangled this weekend. Tonight Columbia (8-1) plays at Penn (8-1) and Cornell (7-2) meets Princeton (8-1).
Tomorrow night the Quakers host Cornell and Princeton faces Columbia. We'll predict that after these games are over Penn will be in undisputed possession of first place.
