Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their second consecutive National League pennant Sunday by beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3, in the second game of a doubleheader.
Koufax, who was pitching with only two days' rest, saved the Dodgers from a possible playoff with the San Francisco Giants. If the Dodgers had lost the second game of the doubleheader to the Phillies and the second-place Giants had beaten Cincinnati in a makeup game that was scheduled for today, a playoff would have loomed.
But as it stands, the Giants will be sitting in the stands when the Baltimore Orioles meet the Dodgers in the first game of the World Series on Wednesday.
