Kirkland House zipped into an early lead in the race for the Straus Cup by thoroughly out-classing the field in the House golf tournament last week.
The Kirks turned in an excellent score of 854 to whip Leverett and Winthrop (tied for second) by 74 shots.
Each golfer turns in one or two scores for the two-day tourney. The low ten scores for each House are added up and the House with the lowest total wins. So Kirkland averaged a little over 85 shots a round. Not bad in last week's chilly, wet weather.
Bob Keefe led the way for Kirkland on the rolling course at the Milton Hoosic Golf Club. Keefe fired two rounds of 73--better than anyone on the varsity ever did all last season.
It was Kirkland's second House Golf win in a row, and like last year, Roger Wales gave Keefe the help he needed to carry the House to victory. Wales this year shot 87, 83--170.
Paul Oldfield turned in Kirkland's second lowest 18-hole score, an 80, and Steve Shakman shot an 87 for his second round to aid the cause of the Smithiesmen.
Sophomore Bill Daly paced Leverett to its second place tie. Daly burned out a 78, 77--155, the second lowest 36-hole total of the tourney.
Winthrop, which matched Leverett's 928, got a big boost from George Warren, whose two-round total of 169 was the fourth-lowest in the contest.
This year's tournament was the first played in the fall. According to intrumural sports director Floyd Wilson, the meet was moved from its usual spring date so it wouldn't conflict with exams.
Wilson had expected a larger turnout than last year, but he got a smaller one. Fifty-nine golfers showed up--four less than last year.
