Spaethling, specialist in German literature of the 18th and 20th centuries, taught German language and literature at Harvard as an assistant professor for four years before accepting the Williams post in 1965. He came to Harvard in 1959 as an instructor of German.

Jack M. Stein, acting head of the German Department and professor of German, said that Spaethling will fill one of two openings in the German Department. The Department has not yet chosen anyone to fill the other vacancy.
