The Harvard hockey team, checked a the verge of greatness for a month, finally came into its own last night with a glorious 7-4 upset of Boston college in the losers' McHugh Forum. Pete Miller and Dennis McCullough which scored twice and goalie Bill Fitz commons shone brighter than he had all star as Coach Cooney Weiland's skaters shot down the highly- touted Eagles for their fourth loss in a row.
The scent of upset was in the air after frantic, defenseless first period in which Harvard piled up a 4-2 lead. The winning performance against New Hampshire last Saturday looked like a bad dream compared to the crisp passing and fast skating of all three lines last night. And when back-checking, aggressive defense suddenly appeared in the last two periods are Crimson power on the horizon had served.
B.C. opened the scoring only four minutes after the opening face off, but in three minutes Harvard had rushed into 2-1 lead.
With B.C. pressing its power play, Ben smith passed long to Miller behind the single defense and the senior wing faked not goalie Jeff Cohen on a clean break-way. One minute later, McCullough took dandy feed from Kent Parrot and scored whom eight feet out.
Harvard was guilty of leaving Eagle towards unmolested in front of the cage all period, and at 9:29, with the Crimson gain down a man, B.C. Capitalized to not the Score.
But Pete Waldinger shoveled in the rebound off a hard shot by McCullough to give the Crimson the lead for good.
The new all-senior third line padded the margin five minutes later when Kevin Burke scrapped the puck away from the B.C. defense and passed to Bobby Clark in front of the nets. The Crimson captain, playing his second game at forward, slipped it to Miller who snuck the puck in from the corner of the crease.
Action was even in the second period after McCullough surprised Cohen from the faceoff circle in the first minute of play. Harvard killed three penalties with no mess or bother and cleanly intercepted every Eagle foray but one.
B.C. produced its final scare when a bad pass by Tag Demment led to Jerry York's goal at the two-minute mark of the third period, cutting the Crimson's edge to 5-4.
But Demment made up for this slip with a slap shot from eight feet inside the blue line that had lit the lamp before Cohen could move. Jack Garrity applied the finishing touches to the triumph when he converted a loose puck from a long shot by Smith that Cohen couldn't control.
Fitzsimmons recorded 38 saves to Cohen's 28 and didn't make a bad play all night.
The Crimson freshmen came from behind on goals by Bobby Bauer, George Murphy, and Dwight Hare to topple the previously undefeated B.C. freshmen, 3 to 2, and the Harvard J.V. annihilated its B.C. counterpart, 11 to 1, to complete a "are sweep.
